Hamilton City School District Transforms Through Race To The Top Work

As a participating LEA, Hamilton City School District has high expectations for working with the state and federal agencies responsible for RttT to meet Ohio’s commitments and timelines and improve student achievement.  We accept the difficulty of the work and appreciate the information and assistance provided by the state this year. Our Scope of Work for 2010-2014 has been approved.

Locally, we are making progress in three critical areas of education reform. The first is Standards and Assessments. Our Instructional Department has:

  • Created a framework to address the new standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies
  • Attended professional development sponsored by ODE at the Hamilton County Board of Education
  • Used the curriculum models and local and state crosswalk documents to analyze the district’s current curriculum to establish strengths and areas of improvement and to identify necessary changes
The second is Using Data to Improve Instruction. Work in this area includes:

  • K-12 teachers and administrators have participated in face to face and on-line professional development modules focused on content specific formative assessments
  • The district plans to participate in sessions to assist the state in establishing system requirements for an Instructional Improvement System that meets RttT criteria as they become available

The third is Great Teachers and Leaders. In the area of measuring student growth the Instructional Department has:

  • Prepared value added notebooks for each building
  • Been trained in District Instruction in Value Added
  • Met with each building principal to review the data
Evaluation systems work by our Human Resources Department and Superintendent includes:

  • District representatives including teachers and administrators participated in a state training session and completed a gap analysis for our teacher evaluation system
  • The District evaluation team met to review areas that need to be included in the teacher evaluation process as noted from the Gap Analysis
  • An administrative evaluation sub committee comprised of principals at all levels met with the superintendent to work on a new administrative evaluation model
  • District representatives will continue to attend professional development related to the state model evaluation system for both teachers and principals as they are scheduled

In Year 2 work will continue in these three areas through local sub committees, the District Transformation Team, Hamilton and Butler County ESCs, and the Ohio Department of Education.

School Improvement

Six Title I served schools have been identified for School Improvement for the 2011-2012 school year.  They are Bridgeport Elementary School, Brookwood Elementary School, Highland Elementary School, Fairwood Elementary School, Crawford Woods Elementary School and Riverview Elementary School.  Parents/guardians of students attending these schools have the option of transferring their student to a similar school in the district that has not been identified for School Improvement.  The following letters describe the parent/guardian choices for each school that is in school improvement status.
