The students at Jefferson Elementary School after having read a story about George Washington Ferris and how he was motivated to invent the Ferris Wheel decided that they would like to take on the project of inventing their own versions of the Ferris Wheel. There are eight students in this group and they had agreed to work in groups of two. The students chose their own materials which ranged from cardboard paper towel tubes to wood. All of the entries were very impressive and showed how the students used their knowledge of recycling to complete their projects.

Five judges, Mrs. Joan Avery, Director of Continuous Improvement & Programs for At-Risk Students, Mr. Steve Connaughton, Language Arts Specialist , Mrs. Mary Anne Hughes, Principal, Jefferson School , Mr. Abe Harris, Jefferson Art Teacher, and Mrs. Jill Richter, Jefferson School Counselor, rated the projects in six different categories ; Replication, Neatness, Functionality, Aesthetic Appeal, Presentation and Time and Effort. Prize ribbons were given for First, Second, Third Place and Honorable Mention.

The students also had to write an informative paper about George Washington Ferris and his invention. The students were very excited about their work, and their ESL teacher, Mrs. Surratt was very proud of their efforts.
