Thank You To Our Adopt-A-School Partners

Many of the activities that we do are supported by our Adopt-A-School partners. They help with awards, incentives, our student cookout and other events.

I would like to thank our Adopt-A-School partners for all their support this year. They provided personal and financial help with many of our activities. Our partners are: McDonald’s Levajo, Pepsi, Chaco Credit Union, Berkeley Retirement Community, Boyd Chiropractic, Copas Dentistry, and Greater Miami Valley YMCA.

Bus Dismissal

In order to maintain safety and insure that our buses leave promptly to the high school, students are asked to report directly to the busses after school. Once the first driver begins driving, they will close their doors and not permit any more students on the bus. If a student misses his/her bus, they must report to the office and meet with an administrator to determine transportation home.

Greater Hamilton Safety Council

The Greater Hamilton Safety Council in conjunction with the Hamilton Police and Butler County Sheriff’s Department will be providing a program called, “So you Want to Drive a Car” to our students on April 3rd. This program helps to educate students about laws, insurance, and other facts about the process of learning to drive as they begin to get their temporary license

Bus Passes

Bus passes for students who need to ride a different bus home will be granted for emergency purposes only. An emergency purpose would be defined as a situation in which the parent is out of town or there will be a lack of supervision for a child after school. Bus passes are granted on a limited basis due to the fact that many of our busses are at full capacity. State regulations and mandates are extremely specific about the requirements of transporting a child home. If a child does need to ride a different bus, the parent/guardian must write a note explaining the reason for the emergency situation. The written note must also contain the date of the needed service, signature of the parent, the bus number the student is needing to ride and a working phone number to verify approval. An administrator will call the bus compound to check bus capacity and find out if there is indeed extra space to transport. The administrator will then call the parent to notify him/her concerning the status of the situation.

testsTesting
Ninth graders do not have a state-mandated test this year; however preparing for and learning new information is imperative for next year when all students, as 10th graders will be required to take and pass the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) in order to graduate from any Ohio School. The Freshman School prepares 9th graders for the OGT by taking two district tests. The first of which, taken in September, Pro-Ohio, is a diagnostic test that contains questions from the OGT to help predict future scores on the OGT. It also gives detailed information to teachers so they prepare better, focused lessons to ensure passage of the OGT next year. The second test that 9th graders take is known as the IOWAS and Cognitive Ability Test. This will take place in October.

Scheduling Questions
After the first two weeks in any semester, students who drop a course will receive an “F” withdrawal grade. This is a mandated board policy for any high school course. Students who fail any courses will need to make those credits up in summer school or later in high school. Please know that scheduling changes are difficult due to limited spacing in the classes.

HelpParent Workshops
One of our goals this year is to increase parent involvement by providing various activities throughout the year.  We have three workshops planned for the year, thus far.  Hamilton Freshman School will welcome Catherine Strunk, RN, BSN, from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry on Thursday, October 11, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. in the school cafetorium.  She will present “Surviving the Teens:  How Parents Can Help their Children Through the Teenage Years”.

Topics of discussion will include suicide, depression and risky behaviors.  Parents will learn about child stress factors, coping techniques and potential warning signs, as well as steps that can be taken to protect children.
