STEAM Education is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to guide student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. This results in students taking thoughtful risks, engaging in experiential learning, persisting in problem-solving, embracing collaboration, and working through the creative process.

The Staff and Administration at Fairwood Elementary wanted to convert some underutilized space into a STEAM room specifically designed to accommodate this type of learning.

The Staff formed a committee to begin exploring their options. They met in the mornings before school and laid out a plan for the room and the resources required. They then worked with their administration and their staff to complete the room and acquire the resources necessary for its launch.

Now complete, this STEAM room contains a lego table, lego wall, multipurpose tables, a 3D printer, Sphero robots, Makey Makey's, Inventor kits, Dash and Dot Robots, tons of building manipulatives, Keva Planks and a vast array of maker space style supplies.

The first two weeks in this new space were simply amazing! Students from K-3 were challenged to create a tree that would hold all 26 letters and 4-6 students took on the Tallest Tower challenge. Click below to catch a glimpse of the amazing things that occurred!
