What does ESL stand for?
English as a Second Language. ESL students are also commonly referred to as FEP (fluent English proficient), LEP (limited English proficient) or ELL (English language learners).
Who is an ESL student?
Any student whose answers to the home language survey questions on the registration form are a language other than English, may be considered an ESL student. The federal definition of ESL is listed below.
How do I know what language level ESL students in my classroom are functioning at?
Each year, students are tested for English language proficiency (ELP) as required by law. The ESL teachers have copies of this information and are able to help you understand the students' language levels.
What type of services do ESL students receive?
Hamilton City Schools offers a combination of push-in and pull-out instructional support for LEP students. These range from English language development outside the classroom to the ESL English course at the high school level.
Do ESL students have to take state tests?
Yes, except for students attending US Schools for the first year - they may have a one-time exemption from taking the OAT or OGT Reading and Writing Tests
What accommodations are ESL students eligible for?
• Students who have been here for three years or more will take all state tests, but are allowed to use a dictionary and have extra time (up to one school day).
• Students who have been here for less than three years will take all state tests, but are allowed to use a dictionary and have extra time (up to one school day) and have extended accommodation such as bilingual version of the test, an audio CD in their language or a read aloud in English.
• Students who have been here for less than one year will take all state tests except reading and writing, but are allowed to use a dictionary and have extra time (up to one school day) and have extended accommodation such as bilingual version of the test, an audio CD in their language or a read aloud in English.
