Intervention Assistance Teams are made up of faculty members from an array of roles who work together to come up with strategies to help students for whom the regular curriculum is not working. The Gifted Intervention Assistance Team(G.I.A.T.) work in the same manner to help generate solutions to problems encountered by gifted or high functioning students who have been identified or are suspected of being gifted. The make-up of the G.I.A.T. depends upon the nature of the concern, but usually includes the classroom teacher, teachers from the previous and/or following grade levels, counselor, gifted educator, principal, and school psychologist. The school nurse, librarian, parents or others who know the student well or who have pertinent specialties may also participate in the G.I.A.T. process. Students may be referred by parents, teachers, or others who deal with the child. Since our gifted services begin at fourth grade, the G.I.A.T. may be employed for younger students who need more challenge.
